Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches

Ten Heavenly Stems

The Ten Heavenly Stems are: 甲、乙、丙、丁、戊、己、庚、辛、壬、癸.

Twelve Earthly Branches

The Twelve Earthly Branches are: 子、丑、寅、卯、辰、巳、午、未、申、酉、戌、亥.

Five Elements Theory

The Five Elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. They interact through generating and overcoming relationships.

Generating Cycle

Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood

Overcoming Cycle

Wood overcomes Earth → Earth overcomes Water → Water overcomes Fire → Fire overcomes Metal → Metal overcomes Wood

Memory tip: Generating describes "what nourishes me" and "what I nourish"; overcoming describes "what restrains me" and "what I restrain".

Element Attributes of Stems & Branches

Each stem and branch corresponds to an element attribute. This mapping is fundamental for Bazi analysis.

Stems and Elements

  • Jia/Yi belong to Wood (Jia is Yang Wood, Yi is Yin Wood)
  • Bing/Ding belong to Fire (Bing is Yang Fire, Ding is Yin Fire)
  • Wu/Ji belong to Earth (Wu is Yang Earth, Ji is Yin Earth)
  • Geng/Xin belong to Metal (Geng is Yang Metal, Xin is Yin Metal)
  • Ren/Gui belong to Water (Ren is Yang Water, Gui is Yin Water)

Branches and Elements

  • Yin/Mao belong to Wood (Yin is Yang Wood, Mao is Yin Wood)
  • Si/Wu belong to Fire (Si is Yin Fire, Wu is Yang Fire)
  • Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei belong to Earth (Chen/Xu are Yang Earth, Chou/Wei are Yin Earth)
  • Shen/You belong to Metal (Shen is Yang Metal, You is Yin Metal)
  • Hai/Zi belong to Water (Hai is Yin Water, Zi is Yang Water)
