Coin Casting
Coin casting is the most traditional casting method, using three coins to cast a hexagram.
Steps
- Prepare three identical coins (or coins)
- Clasp hands together, silently recite the question you want to ask
- Shake the coins and toss them onto a surface
- Determine one line based on the combination of heads and tails of the three coins
- Repeat the above steps six times to get a complete six-line hexagram
Line Determination
- Three heads:Old Yang (—), changing line
- Two heads one tail:Young Yang (—), unchanging line
- One head two tails:Young Yin (--), unchanging line
- Three tails:Old Yin (--), changing line
Number Casting
Number casting is a modern casting method that calculates a hexagram by entering three numbers.
Calculation Method
- Enter three numbers (between 1-999)
- Upper trigram = (first number + second number) % 8
- Lower trigram = (second number + third number) % 8
- Changing line = (sum of three numbers) % 6
- Determine the corresponding hexagram based on the upper and lower trigram numbers
Example:Enter numbers 3, 5, 7<br/>Upper trigram = (3+5) % 8 = 0 → 8 (Kun)<br/>Lower trigram = (5+7) % 8 = 4 (Zhen)<br/>Changing line = (3+5+7) % 6 = 3 (third line)<br/>Result: Earth-Thunder Fu hexagram, with the third line as the changing line
Time Casting
Time casting automatically calculates a hexagram based on the current time or a specified time, which is convenient and fast.
Calculation Method
- Select time (current time or specified time)
- Upper trigram = (year + month + day) % 8
- Lower trigram = (year + month + day + hour) % 8
- Changing line = (year + month + day + hour + minute) % 6
- Determine the hexagram based on the calculation results
Note:Time casting is suitable for quick divination, but traditionally coin casting is more recommended, as coin casting better reflects the principle of "sincerity brings results."
Casting Precautions
- Be calm and focused before casting
- Cast only one hexagram per question, don't cast frequently
- Be sincere and earnest when casting, don't be casual
- Record the time and method of casting for later analysis
